Easy, Stress-Free Ways to Decorate Your Apartment’s Walls

Decorating your apartment can be tricky. Too many mistake holes will incur the wrath of a landlord, but not hanging anything makes the space feel empty and boring. These easy, stress-free tips will help you combat bare walls and make your apartment feel bigger and more lived-in.

Create a Gallery Wall

A gallery wall is often composed of smaller pieces of art that make up a larger display. It could be a single picture broken down, or disparate pieces with a theme. With a picture hanging kit, hanging multiple frames from the wall can be a quick, easy process without having to hunt for the right hardware.

Start with the highest frame to help decide where on the wall you want the gallery to start. Work to the right and down, to get a sense of how long and low the gallery needs to be. Before committing the frames to the wall, space them out on the floor. This gives you a visual sense of what the final arrangement will look like and gives you a reference point when hanging the frames.

To keep your apartment from looking like a crayon factory exploded, plan your colors. Go with a neutral base color and build from there. It never hurts to start with a background similar to the wall to keep a cohesive look. Play with swatches and start with three to five main colors.

Hang a Statement Piece

A statement piece gives the room a wow factor that draws the eye to it. True to the name, it’s meant to make a statement about your design sensibilities. This can be a large piece of artwork, a large poster, or something sculpted out of metal or wood—whatever catches your eye that you can safely hang on the wall.

Keep the frame simple to let the art speak for itself. Use a lightweight frame and picture hanging hardware to frame and hang the piece easily. The frame will give the art a crisp and clean look without drawing focus away from it. This creates a focal point in the room that draws the eye, that you can design around, and that can act as a conversation starter. Look to the statement piece to guide color decisions for other pieces of art in the room.

Use Mirrors to Open and Light Up the Space

In addition to (or instead of) art, you can also hang mirrors on the walls. There are two main reasons for mirrors in a space. First, the mirrors reflect the light, brightening the room without needing more lamps. Second, mirrors make the room look and feel bigger.

These can be hung with the same hardware for picture hanging you would use for other frames. Smaller mirrors can even be easily arranged into a gallery wall. Plus, you can use the mirror to check yourself out without having to head to the bathroom. Lookin’ good!
